Safety Guidelines
Your safety is our top priority. Please read these guidelines before joining any of our hikes.
Before Your Hike
- Inform your guide of any medical conditions, allergies, or physical limitations before the hike begins.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots with ankle support — trail shoes are not suitable for rocky volcanic terrain.
- Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. We'll remind you before each hike, but hydration is your responsibility.
- Check the weather forecast. Conditions in Tenerife can change rapidly, especially at altitude.
Sun & Heat Safety
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen before departure and reapply every two hours.
- Wear a hat and UV-protective sunglasses. The Canary Islands sun is strong year-round.
- Take breaks in shaded areas when available. Your guide will plan rest stops accordingly.
- Recognise signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or headache. Alert your guide immediately.
On the Trail
- Stay on marked trails at all times. Volcanic terrain can be unstable off-path.
- Follow your guide's instructions without exception — they know the terrain and conditions.
- Maintain a safe distance from cliff edges and steep drops. Many trails have no barriers.
- Watch your footing on loose volcanic gravel, especially on descents.
- Do not remove or disturb rocks, plants, or wildlife. Tenerife's ecosystems are protected.
Health & Fitness
- Choose a hike appropriate for your fitness level. Difficulty ratings on our site are accurate — please respect them.
- If you feel unwell at any point during the hike, tell your guide immediately. There is no shame in turning back.
- Altitude can affect anyone. Hikes above 2,000m (like Teide routes) may cause mild altitude symptoms.
- Bring any personal medication you may need (inhaler, EpiPen, etc.) and inform your guide of its location.
Emergency Information
- Your guide carries a first-aid kit and emergency communication device on every hike.
- European emergency number: 112. This works across all Canary Islands.
- In case of injury, stay calm and follow your guide's instructions. Evacuation plans are in place for all routes.
- Travel insurance with hiking cover is strongly recommended but not mandatory.
A note from your guide: I take safety seriously on every hike. If conditions are unsafe, I will modify or cancel a route — no questions asked. Your wellbeing always comes first.
